No ’shortage’ of purged domain names
Posted by Henrik Madsen on January 20, 2009
An interesting indicator of the current economic climate seems to be the rising number of long-held domain names that entrepreneurs and businesses are letting go. Lack of short-term confidence, a shorter order book and a shortage of cashflow may all have played a part in one such multiple domain holder’s decision not to renew 24 domains that seemed primed to corner the Australian market for all things shorts!

Why your website may be a year or more out-of-date
Posted by Henrik Madsen on January 9, 2009
There’s a really easy way to make sure your visitors get the impression that your content is relevant and up-to-date. That you’re a professional organisation that cares about the details. But it’s amazing how many sites simply miss the point.

The problems with big web design agencies
Posted by Henrik Madsen on November 16, 2008
I was chatting to a new business prospect the other day, about designing a new website, and we came to the subject of agency size and internal resources. And I was pleased to tell her we’re small. One of the smallest web design / marketing agencies in Perth, in fact.
Why was I pleased? Because small makes us agile, responsive and attentive.

Is your website in the cesspool of the internet?
Posted by Henrik Madsen on October 10, 2008
Having somewhat accidentally gained top ranking in Google for ‘black-hat SEO’, we’re now tickled to top the results for ‘white-hat SEO’ as well! This redresses the balance but it doesn’t make us ‘grey-hat!’

Should black-hat SEO be reported to Google, Yahoo!..?
Posted by Henrik Madsen on September 9, 2008
Following my recent post about leading web design firms using black-hat SEO to elevate their search rankings, the question is: Should black-hatters be reported to Google and Yahoo!?
The three agencies involved (all of which offer search engine optimization services) are essentially hiding keyword-stuffed elements on their homepages - headlines, semantic links and blocks of text [...]

Top 10 web design firms use black-hat SEO
Posted by Henrik Madsen on August 25, 2008
Notwithstanding websites that still employ old-hat tables and in-line styles, it seems several of our contemporaries are wearing black hats when it comes to search engine optimization. SEO is of course the ‘art and science’ of gaining better placement in search results and there’s certainly no lack of artistry when it comes to leading WA [...]

The Portable Document Format (.pdf) is unquestionably one of the most useful communications tools around. Accessible to just about everyone, the format maintains page layout, graphics, fonts etc so it’s ideal for distributing documents such as forms, catalogues, brochures, questionnaires, artwork, logos and more. But Please Don’t Force (PDF) them on your website visitors. Please [...]

Pushy online ads wave bye-bye to surfers
Posted by Henrik Madsen on July 29, 2008
More than eight-out-of-ten (84%) web users have left a favourite website because of intrusive or annoying online banners and ads. And 70% have stopped visiting a website altogether, according to the 2008 Consumer Attitudes to Online Advertising Study, released last week.
Bugbears included ads with loud sound effects, pop-ups covering web content (my personal peeve) and [...]

How to get your website looking good on iPhone
Posted by Henrik Madsen on July 23, 2008
Anyone who’s surfed around on an Apple iPhone - or in my case an iPod Touch - will know that Apple’s Safari engine renders most sites surprisingly well. Chances are your website was designed purely for desktop browsers, with no consideration for mobile devices, and it might look reasonably good on the iPhone.
But take a [...]

Are you wearing your computer socks today?
Posted by Henrik Madsen on July 17, 2008
To be honest neither am I. But I was amused to discover they actually exist. High-tech Computer Socks, from Holeproof, are apparently famous for ‘falling up, not down.’ And while I think Newton would have had something to say about those physics it seems they’re specially designed - invented in the 1970s - to ‘push’ [...]
